Ducks Unlimited has been committed to protecting wetlands and associated habitats for North America’s waterfowl since 1937. In addition to their private programs, Ducks Unlimited has always supported the US Department of Agriculture’s Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), which provides financial assistance to farmers and ranchers who choose to preserve wildlife habitats and wetland resources on their land.
Unfortunately, CRP agreements that have been protecting waterfowl habitats for many years are expiring, leaving landowners with the option to use the land for food and biofuel production. Increased global needs for these crops have caused previously protected areas to be tilled and converted back into farmland. This takes valuable resources away from the waterfowl population as their prairie habitats are reduced by hundreds of thousands of acres each year. Today, only 22 million acres of native prairie are left for the ducks, and if this current loss trend continues it could have devastating effects on the waterfowl population and the future of waterfowl hunting.
Sports South, LLC recognizes that this situation is reaching a critical level and supports the efforts of Ducks Unlimited to conserve waterfowl habitats through their Rescue the Duck Factory campaign.
The most cost effective way of preserving native prairieland in its most natural, duck-producing state is through grassland conservation easements. Grassland conservation easements work by allowing landowners to enter into a legal agreement, in exchange for a one-time payment, that prevents them and all future owners of that land from ever plowing or destroying the grassland identified in the easement.
However, landowner interest in the grassland conservation easements exceeds the abilities of Ducks Unlimited to meet the funding required to address these opportunities. Therefore, Ducks Unlimited is reaching out to private donors to get involved in their efforts.
“It is our hope that other leaders in the industry will become involved in this effort as well,” said Skipper Dickson, President of Sports South, LLC. “This potential crisis can be prevented by supporting Ducks Unlimited in conserving waterfowl habitats today, which will preserve the future of waterfowl and waterfowl hunting for years to come.”

About Ducks Unlimited, Inc.:
Ducks Unlimited got its start in 1937, during the Dust Bowl when North America’s drought-plagued waterfowl populations had plunged to unprecedented lows. Determined not to sit idly by as the continent’s waterfowl dwindled beyond recovery, a small group of sportsmen joined together to form an organization that became known as Ducks Unlimited. Ducks Unlimited conserves, restores and manages wetlands and associated habitats for North America's waterfowl. For more information about Ducks Unlimited, visit
